You are correct about cancer actually being about 250 individual diseases! Yes, there is slow progress being made on them, and there are researchers and molecular biologists and biochemists and drug companies all searching for cures all the time! Every now and then they do come up with a cure for a specific cancer, but that just means 1 down, 249 to go! Im certain that one day in the future there will be some major breakthrough and all cancers will be cured, just as the discovery of Penicillin quite suddenly ended the scourge of many bacterial diseases such as Scarlet Fever or Syphilis, or when Streptomycin was discovered and suddenly the ancient scourge of Leprosy was brought under firm control! Of course, nobody can tell you the exact year any of this will occur! It could be in 3 months or 3 decades or 3 centuries! But eventually theyll find cures for all of them! Meanwhile, the big cancer killers include many of the preventable ones! Smokers Lung Cancer, for example, has a devastating death rate, and there isnt a lot of progress being made in treating it because it is so stubborn! However, simply by not smoking, you can reduce your risk of such cancer to a very small fraction! Intestinal cancer can be a killer if its not caught in time, but by having regular Colonoscopies after age 40, you can catch those while theyre still in polyp form and very easily removed! Pancreatic cancer is still virtually a death sentence; the long term survival rate is very bleak, and treatment mostly ineffective! Bone cancer is a major killer, and nobody knows exactly what causes that yet! But if you go in and very aggressively treat it, it can be cured! Just going in for a thorough physical every year after age 40 can catch many of these cancers while they are still small, and localized, and therefore susceptible to surgical excision or radiation (which kills cancer 100%)!! That can greatly reduce your risk of cancer death! I wouldnt obsess over cancer, and you need to keep in mind that nobody gets out of this world alive! Eventually, SOMETHING will get you, and all the rest of us! Your life is temporary; make the most of it while youve got it!
